How to Help Hurricane Katrina Victims

Robert J. Mellow

Sen. Robert J. Mellow
Senate Minority Leader

Hurricane Katrina continues to create unimaginable destruction through the Gulf States and up the Ohio Valley. Thousands upon thousands of people are waiting helplessly to see what is left when they return to their communities. The loss of life tragically will continue to grow as the floodwaters recede.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones to the tragedy. The loss of life and property is heartbreaking. Pennsylvanians have always responded with generosity and selflessness in times of national crisis.

The Red Cross is operating more than 250 shelters across seven states, providing a safe haven for nearly 42,000 evacuees -- many who have been left homeless by Katrina. The first priority is meeting the urgent, critical needs of those people, which include providing emergency shelter, food and water.

When a disaster of the magnitude of Hurricane Katrina strikes and the news broadcasts images of broken, battered and destroyed homes, people want to help in some way. People are eager to donate food, clothing or other goods to meet the needs of storm victims and help the affected families begin to replace what they have lost. Monetary financial contributions enable the assistance organizations to help those with the greatest needs in the most efficient manner.

The effects of Hurricane Katrina are unprecedented, and it will take an unprecedented amount of help to recover from them. Your help is desperately needed for the victims of Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast states. In addition to the American Red Cross and the United Way, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has released a list of other organizations accepting donations and volunteers.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has released a list of organizations accepting donations and volunteers to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The American Red Cross can be reached at (800) HELP NOW, or (800) 257-7575 for Spanish speakers. Other organizations recommended are Operation Blessing -- (800) 436-6348 --; and America's Second Harvest -- (800) 344-8070. For a full list of organizations accepting donations and volunteers, visit www.senator-mellow.com, or contact Mellow's Harrisburg office at 717-787-6481.
